نقش مهندسی شیمی در بیوتکنولوژی

بسته به تعريفي كه از بيوتكنولوژي داريم، بيوتكنولوژي مي­تواند به­عنوان يكي از قديمي­ترين تكنولوژي­هاي صنعتي يا يكي از جديدترين تكنولوژي­ها مورد توجه قرار گيرد. با وجود اين براي مهندسي شيمي مسالة اصلي مقياس عملياتي مي­باشد. در بيوتكنولوژي جديد، اغلب محصولات داراي ارزش بالا بوده و به حجم كمي از آنها نياز است؛ البته صنايع بيولوژيك با حجم توليد زياد نيز همچنان داراي اهميت مي­باشد. اما تفاوت­هاي كليدي بين فريندهاي بيولوژيك و فرآيندهاي شيميايي وجود دارد كه بايستي نقش مهندسي شيمي را با توجه به اين تفاوت­ها مورد بازبيني قرار داد. در اين مقاله كه از مجله The Chemical Engineering Journal, 50 B9-B16 انتخاب و ترجمه شده است، فرآيندهاي بيوتكنولوژي متداول با فرآيندهاي شيميايي مشابه مقايسه شده و نقش مهندسي شيمي در طراحي و توسعه فرآيند مورد نظر مورد بررسي قرار گرفته است:
همان­طور كه صنايع شيميايي تا مدت زيادي فقط توسط شيميست‌ها (و نه مهندسان شيمي) مورد بررسي قرار مي­گرفت، فرآيندهاي زيستي نيز هنوز توسط ميكروبيولوژيست‌هاي صنعتي مورد بررسي قرار مي­گيرد. بنابراين بسياري از حوزه­هاي بيولوژيكي وجود دارد كه در آنها مي­توان به­وسيلة كاربرد مفاهيم سادة مهندسي، فرايندهاي بيولوژيكي را توسعه داد.
